Philip Lumbang X Abztract print for a cause
Removal of street-art mural spurs development of limited edition print as benefit for local arts nonprofit
As first reported by our friends at Public Ad Campaign, a mural painted by Philip Lumbang (a friend and featured artist of Abztract), was ordered by the Los Angeles Building & Safety Department to be removed due to a single complaint that was received from a local resident who thought the mural made the neighborhood "seem ghetto". The mural, in LA’s Silverlake neighborhood, has been a welcome scene for residents, nearby preschool students and staff, and random visitors who enjoy an occasional photo-op with the playful, woodsy animals painted on the mural along this pleasant Silverlake street.
Lumbang, a Silverlake-based street-artist, was commissioned by a local couple to paint a wall that wraps around their property nearly a year ago. However, the lone complaint to the LA’s Building & Safety Department has left the property owners facing removal of the mural by March 1 or paying a hefty fine. For a variety of reasons, the owners have chosen not to fight the city, and so the mural could be coming down. With help from local City Council Member Eric Garcetti, a fan of the mural, the owners and fans are hopeful that the mural can be saved before the March 1 deadline.Lemons? Make lemonade:
Lumbang and Abztract have teamed up to release "The Mural" Limited Edition print and help the local community while doing so. This 18" x 24" three-color screen print was created by Lumbang, who used one of the most recent photos taken of the mural. The print is on 100lb archival paper and is an edition of only 100 prints total. A potion of the proceeds from the sales of this print will go to Room 13 Foshay, a Los Angeles nonprofit that provides mentoring and education programs to inner-city youth with a passion for arts.

Room 13 Foshay is part of the Light Bringer Project, a local arts and community-building nonprofit, and Room 13 International, an international multi-media studio that encourages and sponsors youth-created art in its 39 studios around the world. Lumbang and other local artists are active participants in the Los Angeles group’s activities.
How you can help:
Abztract has released "The Mural" limited edition print for pre-order as of TODAY. To get your limited edition screenprint, go to ABZTRACT.COM and place your order today at the online shop. Once the prints become available for shipping, we will notify you via email and send you further information. If you prefer to order by email, please contact us at info@abztract.com
About the artist:
Lumbang, whose YouTube video painting this mural has had nearly 38,000 views, spent some time learning the ins and outs of street-art culture from Sherpard Fairey at Studio One. Since then, he has been painting his infamous "Awesome Bears." The Bears, along with their other furry, woodsy friends have taken the internet by storm as fast as he’s been able to get them up on the streets. Lumbang’s woodsy work has appeared in Arizona and San Francisco, and he’s also participated alongside Abztract and Public Ad Campaign during the NYSAT in the summer of 2009.

Philip Lumbang : Sacramento Street Dreams
Our good friend and featured artist Philip Lumbang is unstoppable. The guy rolls to Sacramento and brings the bear love with him. After only spending half a day in the city, the kid lets his "awesome bears" take the streets and bring a smile to the faces of Sac-Towners.
We say "Keep it coming!" to Philip. How can anyone ever call these furry, wooded area animals vandalism? Seriously.

Haters Are Bastards

We dislike haters. There are a lot of individulas and groups out there that hate on street art and their form. We here at BGB call those haters a bunch of bastards who obviously lack talent and had father-issues. They are like that kid in class in Junior High who used to tell on you to the teacher when you spent time doodling ninjas on your book instead of focusing on reading "Fahrenheit 451".
Lately, there has been a few punk ass haters who shot up a Banksy piece up with a paintball gun. It got a lot of attention in the blog world and even Lance Armstrong Twittered about it saying “Quit shooting paintball guns at the Banksy please!"
Well, it looks like one of our Abztract Featured Artists and one of a few street artists who can actually pull off street art that is both thought provoking and cute at the same time, was hit up in the same manner that Banksy was. Philip Lumbang, a Los Angeles native and one artist we truly believe will be bigger than any of us hopes he will be, had one of his iconic "Peaceful Bears" splatterd with paintballs.
We are not sure why people go out of their way to destroy art. If it's to prove a point about how street-art is destroying public property, well than shooting it with paintball guns is not really an effective way to do this. Nobody ever gets away with killing a murderer to prove that killing people is bad.
It is especially upsetting when they do it to work like Philip's awesome bears. How can you hate on cute little bears who add value to an otherwise boring and bland asphalt? It ads a way for people to enjoy the uninteresting surroundings and helps add art into the community (which is way better than stuffing it with advertisements).
So this post is for you haters. You got the attention you obviously lacked from your parents. We give you two thumbs up for being world class douchbags and while, as Philip puts it in his tweet "Are an awesome shot", apparently, aiming forward is the only thing you are good at.
Perhaps its time to stop aiming at art, and aim for the sky instead. Be someone who ads value to the world instead of destroying the hard work of those who already are making a difference in it.
Stay Happy as a Bear Yall!

Congrats to our Featured Artists
We here at Abztract take pride when original art of our Featured Artists sells. It means that we have done something right and helped bring affordable and fresh art by our artists to the homes of happy fans.

So, we want to congratulate Temple7e, Philip Lumbang and Shai Dahan for having their original skateboards sold this week. Temple7e's Ganesh skateboard has been a big hit at our Gawker Artists exhibit. Philip's HUG LIFE bear has been getting a lot of attention. From Unurth.com to many other sites that have been following Phil's amazing talent gain exposure faster than we could ever wish for him. Finally, Shai's skateboards continue to spread across the world. With skateboards sold to customers all across the U.S. and even as far as Sweden and UK, it is no surprise that his talent at painting skateboards is still growing in popularity.
So Congrats to all three of our featured artists this week and to all the other fantastic artists Abztract currently has featured in our shop. We will be adding more stuff from Temple, Philip and Shai and continue to add new artists and give people some great affordable art to hang in their crib.

NYSAT2 : Shai Dahan and Philip Lumbang help take illegal advertisement down

On Sunday, October 25th, 2009, along with our good friends of Public Ad Campaign, Philip Lumbang from LA and Shai Dahan hit the NYC streets to help whitewash illegal advertising that are placed throughout the city by NPA Advertising.
From 10 a.m., Shai and Phil, along with a more than 50 other whitewashers in groups of twos took to the streets to take back public space from illegal advertising.
Below are a few images of Phil's and Shai's work. Unfortunately, NPA and the NYPD found out about the plan rather early and many locations were either re-pasted by NPA with new ads or artists were ticketed and/or arrested.
But, we here still see it as a success. New photos of other artists coming soon to new posts.
