Some Art In Israel

Some members of the Abztract Clan were touring around in Israel this past week. On their last day in Tel-Aviv, they came across these jems.
Most are fairly old artwork (the Know Hope dates back to 2008). Still, awesome to see that they are still up and being enjoyed by locals and visitors alike.

Joe Iurato paints his own Sistine Chapel

So a few weeks back, we showed you the fresh Gonz stencil our homie and Abztract artist Joe Iurato did.  Well, besides busting out some crazy dope original art for the Rogue Status show we did in LA in early April, the dude has been keeping himself very busy.

Joe hit up DAY ONE Skateshop in CT and took on the challenge of painting upside down for the first time (straight up Sistine Chapel style).  The stencil work he did on their ceiling is of John Cardiel and Mark "The Gonz" Gonzales.  

Check out these action shots.  Joe tells us that he will be returning to DAY ONE SKATESHOP to add additional work to their ceiling adding more portraits every couple of months painting it live during the shops events until the entire ceiling is full.  

Props and kudos for not only taking on such an extreme challenge, but doing so by giving homage to some true skate legends.

Molly Dilworth takes street-art to space!

There is street-art, and then there is space-art!

Molly Dilworth is an artist who paints rooftops and has Google Earth as her online gallery. Why? Because the giant rooftop paintings she creates can be seen from space and as they get photographed by satellites via Google Earth, it becomes her online portfolio. Genius!

The process in which she makes these paintings is very neat. She paints large pixel-like squares that from space, create a fantastic looking image. Check out some images below and check out her Flickr link for additional images, concepts and process images

WU TANG X BEATLES = PRETTY DAMN GOOD MIX

We are fans of "good" mashups (although we hate the word Mash-up). Good ones do not come very often. To be honest, the last decent one we enjoyed was the JAY Z X BEATLES mix by Dangermouse. Since then we heard a Led Zep X Jay Z mix as well as many other somewhat "meh" mixes.

But today, we came across this BEATLES X WU TANG CLAN mix by Tom Caruana.

This does not dissapoint. While some of the tracks are just OK, the majority got multiple replays on our speakers in the studio.

Worth1000 - Graffiti meets classical art

Worth1000.com, the site that has gained fame for putting photoshop contests together had a new contest recently close. Designers and artists alike were encouraged to manipulate classical artwork into a graffiti driven neighborhoods.

The outcomes are somewhat visually stunning. Fresh.

Million Snowmen March

It's winter. Saddest part about winter is that street-art pretty much hibernates. Artists don't hit the streets to put up new work as much (atleast not many) and even if some do, it is very unenjoyable to go roam the streets to find the new pieces and catch them on camera.

But, art comes in many shapes and forms. Sometimes, that form is frozen H2O.

We ran across this image via Urban Pranksters who found it originally on Flickr.

We just couldn't resist posting it here too. I mean seriously, this is pretty damn cool.

Some may say "Well, this isn't art". But we see art partly defined as:

1) something that takes time, creativity and thought

2) Uses elements beyond just the normal (pencil and paper)

3) provide some sort of thought or emotion.

We think this accomplishes all three so yes, to us atleast, this is art.

STREET LAYERS - Beauty Uncovered

There is nothing more exciting for us then discovering a new piece by a favorite artist, or even discovering a new artist all together. Roaming the streets of NYC and LA (or even great websites like Unurth for example) that consistently update with images from around the world covering street-art, we always get a kick when we come across something dope.

But, when we come across a new site that captures the beauty of street-art, occasionally it can be just as rewarding. It's hard to compare seeing something in your own eyes as to seeing it online. You never capture the atmosphere, the vibe, the city, the culture and everything that revolves around the art. What the art is surrounded by, or faces or sits next to is just as important as the reason and cause of the piece being there in the first place.

But, on a rare occasion, some great photographers come along and capture art on the streets that capture the feeling and vibe of everything involved. For example is the image above. The photo was taken at the MBP art show and sums up exactly the sensation that was felt that day. That even rain, can not stop anyone there from having fun (young or old). People painted and enjoyed the day of art regardless of the weather.

The image was captured by Vinny Cornelli who we had the pleasure of meeting briefly at the MBP event. Vinny mentioned a site where he archives his collection of photographs he has been taking over the years. Since we love the image above, we had to try and see how the rest of his work looks.

Introducing, STREET LAYERS.

As written by Vinny in the much inspiring ABOUT page on the site, he describes what SL is and what he hopes to accomplish with it and his photographs:

"STREET LAYERS is specific to finding beauty amidst an often-chaotic home base. In one iteration, I consider this beauty as it is one of the ways we stand together, united and tied to another - It is our voice; it is our art.

We are not sure how we only just discovered this site (as seeing its been archived since 2004) but we have viewed majority of the images and still finding new favorites on it.

We recommend you take 10 minutes out of the cube life, or out of roaming facebook, or out of reading another Perez Hilton post about crackheads in Hollywood and take yourself over to STREET LAYERS. Enjoy some amazing photography of street-art around the world.
